If you are having a tooth extracted soon, you’re probably looking forward less to having that tooth removed, and more to how your smile will look after you get the tooth replaced. Going from a damaged, incomplete smile to one that you’re proud to show people is a great feeling.

Dentures are one of the most popular tooth replacement options, and many people get a set of them after having several problem teeth extracted. However, you may wonder how much time you’ll have to deal with gaps in your smile before you can get your dentures. The answer depends on a few factors; here’s a guide that can give you some useful information.

When Can I Get Dentures After Tooth Extraction?

If you’re getting a set of either partial or complete dentures after an extraction, there are two ways to go about it. You can wait for the extraction areas to heal, or you can get your dentures immediately after removing the teeth.

What If I Get Them Immediately?

In some cases, your dentist will give you dentures immediately after your tooth extraction. You’ll be fitted for the prosthetic before the tooth is removed so that they’re ready on the day of the procedure.

In this scenario, the dentures act like a kind of bandage that protects the extraction wounds while they heal. This will probably be a little bit uncomfortable, and in the days after the procedure, you’re likely to experience a few sore spots or excess saliva production.

Your gums will also shrink as they heal from the procedure, so you may need frequent relinings after you get your initial set of dentures.

Waiting to Heal

On the other hand, you may prefer to wait for your gums to heal after the treatment. This will be a little bit more comfortable than getting your dentures immediately, and you’ll require fewer relinings, but you’ll also have to wait 6-8 weeks for the wounds to heal. As a result, you’ll have to deal with a month or two of missing teeth.

Which situation is best for you comes down to personal preference. Talk to your dentist before your extraction, and they’ll walk you through the best option for you.
